FITNESS IS AFFORDABLE
Over the past 6 months, I've seen many people come in and cancel their membership because they just cannot afford the monthly fee. Not only is the Y experiencing this, but BIG commercial gym chains as well. In response to the tough economic situation, some BIG commercial gyms have dropped their prices dramatically to get folks to return, and to get new members/customers. Some of my clients have put me on notice, and I really appreciate their honesty. I completely understand that it is difficult to spend money on your health/ fitness over spending money on groceries or paying bills. HOWEVER, staying healthy and fit is affordable. You just have to be creative. Walking in your neighborhood is FREE. Hiking one of our urban reserves is FREE. If you have a bicycle that's been sitting in your garage, dust if off and ride it! If you have kids, play with them. That's FREE!
Remember what I said earlier about being creative....well if you are a student at a community college of university, use their fitness center. It's usually free for registered students. Also, most community colleges and universities offer courses in fitness from belly dancing to golf. A few years ago, I learned how to play golf at Mesa Community College because I could not afford private lessons. It was a blast! I could go on more about this class, but that's another blog. Do you live near a community center? Most community centers offer courses in fitness such as yoga or Pilates and some community centers offer drop in adult dodge ball or basketball for a nominal fee.
But if you want to learn more about strength training and you're a "hands on" learner, hire a personal trainer to show you how to do it. Many of us personal trainers offer a "one time" or "intro" package deal or buddy/small group sessions. I offer a 3 for $99 one-on-one package for first time clients, and there is NO obligation to buy more training. I also offer a Buddy Package. Buddy training and small group training maybe a great affordable option for you. Just one thing to remember about buddy training, you might want to find a buddy that's at your fitness level and is committed to showing up. At a private studio I worked at a few years back, I remember how frustrating it was for one of our clients. She would show up but her buddy flaked on her several times. Same thing applies for small group training. Also, if you and a few of your co-workers are committed to getting in shape, you may want to consider pooling your money together and hiring a personal trainer that will come to your office.
Staying healthy and fit is affordable, you just got to be creative and think outside the box.
Stay healthy my friends!
